Mondaine Chronograph with Night Vision

The Luminox Recon, Point Man

Well, we are once again excited about a Luminox product. Surprising I know, but Luminox is just one of those products that once you try it, you have to have it. The Tritium illumination is the key, but the watches are also a nice quality and Swiss Made. Fortunately the company is also growing and that means we keep getting new styles. Below is one of the newest styles just released for 2011.

The Recon Series is the newest series available from Luminox and the first watch available is the 'Point Man'. This series is very different from most of the other Luminox watches available today. While the overall style and build are similar to the Colormark Series, the function and illumination are completely unique.

You see the 'Point Man' is a watch designed for the ground solider and out door adventurer. And it's built with features that are actually useful for those out and about. The first and most important unique feature is the Walking Tachometer. This feature is rarely found on any watch and allows you to judge exactly what speed you are walking. this is handy for real field situations where you need to determine how far something is, how far you have traveled and how long it will take to get where you are going. Combined with this feature is the sun-compass functionality and bezel for timing. The watch even has a countdown quadrant of the dial that can be used to time maneuvers. Very cool stuff.

Plus you also get a great looking watch once the sun goes down. Take a look at the night illumination (pictured below). Very stylish blue and orange tritium light the way and still allow the watch to be used for timing maneuvers at night. Not to mention that is also striking to the casual observer.

Torgoen's Newest Series - Alarm, GMT

We are pleased to introduce the newest series of Torgoen Swiss Professional Pilot's Watches, the T30 Collection. The T30's are the first Alarm Watches ever offered by Torgoen Swiss. And they off a fully independent 24 hour Military Style Hand and outer dial for tracking ZULU Time or a 2nd Time Zone. But we like the T30's because we think they are, by far, the best looking watches in the entire Torgoen line!

The Dual Time Hand (marked by a "24" on the end of the hand) hand can be set independently of the primary watch. It keeps track of time on the 24 hour scale with markers around the outer dial. Most pilots will set this hand to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), often also called ZULU Time and used by all pilots for logs and record keeping. Travelers might want to use it to keep track of a 2nd time zone. The watch is easy to read and features a big triple date window and a sweep second subdial.

The T30 has a 12 hour analog alarm feature. Like most alarm wristwatches, the alarm is not loud and might not awaken a sound sleeper. It is ideal for keeping track of appointments or timing intervals. And like all the best Alarm watches, it is extremely east to set and use.

Ok, now I have to admit that we are a little excited about this one. The Watch Guys are truly pleased to present the newest Citizen Atomic Timekeeping model, the World Perpetual AT. Now as you may know Citizen has been making Eco-Drive watches with their 'AT' (atomic time) feature for a few years now. It all started with the Skyhawk AT and blossomed from there. The Lady Trooper - An actual Ladies Tritium Watch

The Watch Guys are pleased to present the new Luminox Series 1500 Deep Dive Automatic Watches. Our first look into some of the new watches coming out this Fall from some of our favorite brands. So let's get right to it...

The Deep Diver is limited to a strict 500 pieces worldwide, with very few even to be offered for sale within the United States. The Luminox Deep Diver Automatic is one of the finest watches Luminox has ever created and each watch is individually numbered.

The Deep Dive Series complies with the strict, high standards of the Norm International Standards Organization ISO 6425 for diving watches and even exceeds those standards for visibility in darkness. Of course that's not much of a surprise to those familiar with Luminox.

You see Luminox uses Tritium for the illumination and it is by far the most important feature on any of their watches. The Deep Diver Series 1500 delivers unmatched visibility underwater with ice blue and bright green Luminox Light Technology (LLT) Tritium Gas encased in tiny glass tubes that glow brightly and continuously for up to 25 years.

Innovation is the watch industry happens in fits and spurts. Sometimes you will see a watch company get truly innovative and begin to push the barrier while others will go generations without actually changing anything substantial. Often the most innovative companies are the ones who are just starting out. People with truly fresh ideas and perspective. People eager to make a difference and wow the world with there idea. Sometimes it hits and sometimes it misses.

Today I want to talk about ONE such company. ONE that developed something truly innovative and is now enjoying great success. I am of course talking about 01 THE ONE. 01 THE ONE is a little company that had a brilliant idea for telling time that was unlike anything anyone had ever seen. Developed by a computer programmer, 01 THE ONE watches would use binary (the base code for all programming) for telling time.

Using LED's and a new format for time telling, 01 THE ONE watches were born. The result is a unique and good looking time piece with a great story. I defy you to wear ONE of there watches and not get a comment from passers by. It's a conversation piece and a great choice for anyone who doesn't want to go with the crowd.

Now reading the time does take a little getting used to but once you wear it for a while it becomes second nature. Personally the original (pictured above) is my favorite but they have developed two alternate versions (pictured below)

My only problem with the latter two is that they seem slightly less true to the original concept of binary time. Still, they are very cool and the most recent is much easier to tell time with. Saving money, but at what cost?

Still looking for the best deals? Of course you are. We all are. The economy is still uncertain and people are still very aware of every penny they spend. Everyone is looking to get the best deals on each item they buy. Nothing wrong with that. It's just good business. Why pay more for the same item? There really is no good reason, as long as you buy from the right places. You see the Internet is a wonderful medium. It connects us with the entire world, which is wonderful, but it also has it's down side. You see, not everybody is good and honest.

Sure, for the most part you can easily spot the really bad guys but what about the guys that live in the gray area? When it come to watches and watch dealers, the internet has more "gray market" dealers than honest Authorized dealers. So what exactly is a "gray market" dealer and how does it effect you?

A "gray market" dealer is a company that sell the popular brands but does not buy directly from the manufacturer. They get their products from a 3rd party. This is troubling for a lot of reasons. First off, there is no way to guarantee the quality of the product. Because it comes from a 3rd party, there is no telling where it really came from. It could be a referb, used, repaired or even defective watch and because it did not come directly from the manufacturer you often get no warranty. And you really can't blame the manufacturer. I mean they don't know where that watch has been or the condition in which it was sold.

So even if the watch seems to be new and in good condition, you still have no warranty if something goes wrong (and usually nobody tells you that when you buy it). You just assumed you got a really good deal and only find out the bad news when you try to get service. It is not an ideal situation and worse, most customers don't know until it's too late. Well fortunately I am here to help. I can tell you how to find the good deals and buy from the right places.

(Look for authorized badges like these)

The first thing you need to do is identify the good guys. It's not too hard to do. Sometime it's as easy as looking for a "Dealer Badge" and sometimes you have to look a little deeper. The "Dealer Badge" is by far the best tool for finding the good guys. If you see a badge you are usually good to go and most of them are clickable. They will take you directly to the manufacturer's website, to a verification page, which will confirm the websites authorized dealer status. Unfortunately, not every watch manufacturer uses a badge system. So, if no badge is present (or available) the best thing is check out the dealer directly with the manufacturer. Give them a call or go to their website. Every manufacturer has a dealer listing and if you take a few minutes to check out who you are buying from, you can save yourself a lot of heartache down the road. It might be a bit of a hassle but it's worth it in the long run.

Once you find a good reputable dealer, you are good to go. Check out the Clearance page and go wild. Don't see what you want from the Clearence page? Then give them a call. Most every dealer is ready to make a deal. Give them a call and let them know exactly what you are looking for. Most of the time you will get good personal service, a competitive price and a full manufacturers warranty. It's Win, Win, Win. Buy with confidence knowing you got a good deal from an honest well established dealer.

Traser Ladyline?

In the world of Tritium watches a true LADIES watch is rare indeed. Sure there are some 3/4 models out there that are generally much larger than most woman want to wear and even those are hard to find. In general, a ladies Tritium watch is non existent. Granted not every woman in the world is clamoring for a ladies Tritium watch but there is definitely a market for it. Especially for woman in the medical profession, military and law enforcement to name a few. (And we get calls from people looking for a good ladies Tritium watch every day.)

So you can understand how excited I was to hear that Traser, makers of nice quality Tritium watches, was making an entire line of Ladies watches! This was something the watch industry was in dire need of and Traser was poised to take full advantage.

Unfortunately, they really dropped the ball. At least in terms of "Ladies" watches. Don't get me wrong, the "Ladyline" by Traser has some Fantastic Models, Great Quality, New Attractive Designs and features you want. So you are asking yourself, If everything is so good, what's the problem? The problem is that the watches are too big. Full size actually! That's right, full size mens watches. In fact, many of them are the same watches they already make. They just simply "Repainted" them and stamped them with "Ladyline" on the label. Take a look at some of the side by side comparisons.

These are the EXACT same watches as the "men's" counterpart. Just with different color combinations/bands.

Literally no difference at all. Same watch, same size, same features. Seems like a copout to me. If you are going to make a ladies line of watches, then make some new watches. Not just repaint the men's watches.

Now to be fair they did develop some legitimately new models (one pictured below). These are great looking models! Some even using PINK Tritium, which is a fantastic touch. And with these being ALL NEW designs, surely they made them an appropriate size, right? Nope, sorry. These models are even BIGGER than the largest mens watch they make. Just how big? 44mm on average. (Most of the mens line is 40mm-42mm).

Of course, I realize that these are Swiss designed watches and as long as we are being objective, you need to have all the facts. Over in Europe ladies are wearing much larger watches then they are here in the USA. In fact, it is not unusual to see a ladies watch push the 50mm barrier... in Europe, but unfortunately we have not quite gotten there here in the USA. So what does this mean for ladies here in the USA looking for a Tritium watch? It looks like you're going to have to continue to wait. The Ladyline from Traser is not the answer to the average consumer here in the States.

So, in the mean time, What do we do with the "Ladyline"? Easy, sell them for what they are. New mens models. (and a few LARGE ladies models) Because aside from the Pink and Blue models, every one of these look quite sharp and could easily be worn by men.

So those looking for some new styles, you're in luck. Those looking for new "ladies" watches, you may need to pass on this one. I just don't think America is ready for these watches just yet.

In this new H3 Tactical Stealth Mission Watch, the hour hand only travels around the dial once every 24 hours! For pilots traveling day and night across many time zones, this design is extremely desirable. At a glance the pilot knows the time in the military 24 hour format.

The Uzi Ballistic Watch

UZI is calling their new Ballistic Watch the toughest watch ever made. While this might be a slight exaggeration, it is one really tough watch and one we can heartily recommend to our clients.

The Ballistic is the latest in a line of Tritium Illuminated Watches from UZI. Tritium Illumination glows brightly for 25 years and never needs recharging.

Not to shabby huh? Not only is it chalk full of features but it is also easy to use. Citizen has all but perfected the user interface. The functions are easy to use and intuitive. Within two minutes of playing with the watch, most users will be able to use every function of this watch without the use of the instruction book.

With features like World Time with 43 Cities and a true 24 hour alarm this watch is perfect for the world traveler. Or someone who needs to keep track of several time zones. With the SST you can set the alarm for 6:00am and you don't have to worry about it going off later that evening when you don't need it.

This watch also feature a 99 Minute Count-Down Timer. This feature can be set for any 1 minute increments between 1 and 99 minutes. Simply set it for the desired time (say 15 minutes) and start the count down. Once the timer reaches "0" an alarm will sound to let you know the timer has expired. Very handy for timing anything. Say you are multi-tasking, cooking BBQ and prep work. Set the timer and start working. When the alarm sounds you know it's time to check those ribs. There really are 100's of uses for this function. Very handy.

Of course, once again, the Chronograph is the star of the show. This is a true 24 hour Chronograph. Not a 12 hour or 30 minute chrono you find in most watches... 24 hours! There really is almost nothing you can't time. The 24 hour race at Le Mans? No problem! Not only that, but full split time functionality, Average Speed Calculation and a 20 Lap Memory! This means that the last 20 lap time are actually stored in an internal memory that you can pull up and review at a later date. There really isn't any better chronograph on the market.

New Citizen SST - Part 1

Well here we are again about to head into another Holiday Season. People are starting to think gifts and gift giving, the best values for the best products and are always looking for the hot holiday gift. One of this year's top contenders for that category is the New Citizen Eco-Drive SST.

So, in honor of this watch, we are doing a special 2-Part story on the SST and all of it's features. Today, we are going to look at the overall design and analog functions. In part 2, we are going to get technical: cover the digital functions, model specifics and available options including the Limited Edition version and how to get one! Be sure to check back next week for the continuation. Now on to part 1...

The SST is one of Citizen's newest entries into the ever growing segment of high-end sport watches. And let me tell you, this is one of the best watches Citizen has ever made. One look at the close-up of the dial and you can already tell that Citizen is really producing top quality watches.

One of the first things you'll notice are the unique sub-dials. These sub-dials are very reminiscent of sports car gauges. Attractive, well designed and functional. First (to the far left) you have your second hand counter. This sub-dial is directly tied into the Chronograph and Race Timer functions. It is an analog reading for the chrono/timer when in use. This dial gives you a full 60 second count with markers every 5 seconds and an attractive silver dividing line for the first and last 30 seconds. Just another small detail that adds to the overall pleasing lines of this watch.

On the opposite side (far right) you have the 12/24 hour sub-dial. This is a fairly standard addition to the modern Citizen sport watch. This sub-dial is directly tied to the main Hour hand on the watch. It is effectively an am/pm indicator and tracks around only once in a 24hr period. Once again we see the silver marker across half of the dial. This time, to indicate Daylight hours vs. Night.

Finally, we come to the center piece of the analog dials. This dial sits up front and center and is by far the most fun to play with. This sub-dial is noticeable larger than the others and tracks both 1/10 and 1/100 of a second in real time (for the first minute). Hit the start button on the chrono and watch this dial jump to life at lightning speeds. This sub-dial actually has two hands. One that rotates at a 1/10 of a second speed and the other at 1/100 of a second! This hand moves so fast it actually looks like a red blur. Very Cool!!!

Of course, apart from function, we also have form. This watch is one good looking timepiece. And everything on this watch has the same rich detail. From the sub-dials to the case to the crown to the buttons. Every part of this watch is beautiful! Take a look at the close-up of the crown and buttons. Notice how the buttons are fitted with rubber accents for extra grip and feel. Look at the ribbed crown with the "Promaster" insignia emblazoned on the side. And the Hex-head screws that actually double as both design cues as well as being the actual hinge for the push buttons!

It's the little details like these that really make this watch stand out above the rest. Each part of this watch comes together to make something more than just the sum of it's parts... Major Price Increases from the Swiss

Most of the large Swiss Watch manufacturers have now announced really major price increases to be implemented over the summer, most in the month of June. Price increases are ranging from 13% up to 27% and cover virtually all models in the brand's assortments.

There are two major reasons for the price increases and then there is also the mindset of the Swiss who own the factories.

First are the actual cost increases in the manufacturing process. Raw materials, labor and production costs have all risen significantly. And the cost of shipping, as you all probably know, has skyrocketed.

Second, and much more important, is the exchange rate between the US Dollar and the Swiss Franc. The dollar is at an all time low. Because most (but not all) Swiss Watchmakers have held off on price increases, they are now caught in a terrible bind. At today's exchange rate they are simply losing money. Watches sold in the United States at the current exchange rates are below the actual costs, after the exchange rates are considered.

Finally, the price increases are often rather strange because of the mentality of the Swiss owners. They are extremely concerned about the possibility of their customers transshipping watches from country to country. So they are attempting to balance all the exchange rates around the world. This leads to some really bizarre retails like $406.00 or $842.00 rather than the conventional price points like $399.00 or $799.00.

When all factors are considered, I believe this will cause huge sales decreases in Swiss Watches. When I see a really popular watch like the Swiss Made Luminox Ultimate Navy Seals Chronograph (model 8351) going from an affordable $650.00 up to $825.00, a 27% increase, I'm not certain the consumer won't turn to much more affordable products from the far east and Japan.

The Japanese and American are holding prices or limiting them to very small increases of 2% to 5%. The gap in pricing will become huge.

The bottom line is that if you're considering a Swiss Watch, purchase it quickly before the prices go up. You could save hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

A $300,000.00 Watch That Doesn't Tell Time

I just knew all our clients and readers would just love to read this story, from The Wall Street Journal:

A $300,000 watch? Luxury. A $300,000 watch that doesn’t tell time — and that
sells out? Pure genius.

According to several news reports flagged by my friends at Luxist, Swiss watchmaker Romain Jerome just launched the “Day&Night” watch. The watch won’t tell you what time it is. That’s so yesterday. But it does tell you whether it’s day or night — helpful, I guess, for billionaire types who can’t afford windows.

As the company’s Web site boasts: “With no display for the hours, minutes or seconds, the Day&Night offers a new way of measuring time, splitting the universe of time into two fundamentally opposing sections: day versus night.”

What’s most impressive about the Day&Night is its complexity, given its absolute uselessness. The watch features two tourbillons — devices that overcome the ill
effects of earth’s gravity on a watch’s accuracy — connected by a differential mechanism. Instead of hands, the watch has a “contemplative tourbillon operation
whereby the ‘Day’ tourbillon operates for 12 hours to symbolize working life, while the ‘Night’ tourbillon takes over afterward to represent an individual’s private time.”

Like other Romain Jerome watches, the watch is made in part with steel salvaged from the sunken Titanic, along with material from the shipyard where it was built. That sounds creepy to me, but maybe today’s buyers prefer morbid metals.

The company’s chief executive, Yvan Arpa, cited statistical studies to explain how the watch better reflects the time-philosophy of today’s wealthy.

“When you ask people what is the ultimate luxury, 80 percent answer ‘time’. Then when you look at other studies, 67 percent don’t look at their watch to tell what time it is,” he told Reuters.

He added that anyone can buy a watch that tells time — only a truly discerning customer can buy one that doesn’t.

And here’s the best part: The watch sold out within 48 hours of its launch.

Gold Continues to Soar

The soaring cost of gold and platinum is causing pandemonium in the UK's jewellery market as retailers and private owners rush to reappraise the value of necklaces, brooches and rings.

Jewellers in London's Hatton Garden - the capital's jewellery quarter - are raising the price of wedding bands on a weekly basis, with less-expensive palladium rings now coming into vogue. And insurers are urging clients to get
another assessment of the value of their jewellery collections in response to the rapid rise in the price of precious metals, sparked by investors seeking refuge from volatile stocks.

"The price of platinum has been going up so fast, we're quoting people prices for platinum wedding bands on a Saturday and saying we can't guarantee the same price on Monday.

Scores of jewellers and private investors have also had expensive articles reappraised to be sure they are not caught out in case of loss or theft.

The price of gold hit a record $975.90 yesterday, ending European trading at $970.40 a troy ounce, while platinum hit a record $2,158 a troy ounce last week.

It is an excellent idea to have your better and heavier gold jewelry reappraised for insurance purposes. You'll find that over the last three years prices have at least doubled. In the case of some Swiss Made gold watches, the price for a replacement watch has tripled.

Have your diamond jewelry reappraised, too. Diamonds continue to increase in price, although not as rapidly as gold. Still, the effect on replacement costs can be staggering.

Bargain hunters should shop local jewelry and on the Internet for dealers who have been slow to adjust prices. There are many items on-line at prices well below the new dealer cost.

There has literally never been a better time to go treasure hunting.

Colors Explode!

That's right! Colors are HOT right now when it comes to watches. Everything from New brightly colored dials to the ultimately popular Color Matched Tritium markers. Everywhere you look...colors are here! Take the new Colormark Series from Luminox for example. This new series is as hot as they come. They are selling so fast that Luminox can't even keep up. Why? The Skyrocketing Price of Gold

Although this is a watch forum, I would really be remiss if I didn't point out the stunning increase in the price of gold over the last few days.

We are already seeing some gold watch manufacturer's raising the prices of their watches and others attaching a surcharge for the amount that gold rises above the $600.00 per ounce benchmark.

Here is a live active chart for the price of gold from the folks at Kitco:

As I write this entry gold is hovering around $733.00 per ounce, the highest prices in over 30 years.

Ultimately this will affect the prices of gold electroplated watches, too. And the gold jewelry on our Gem of the Day website is being heavily affected.

The good news is that all the gold you already own is increasing in value. Certainly it has always made sense to have gold, precious metals and other commodities as part of your savings portfolio. But your gold jewelry is increasing in value, too!!

The Theory of EVO-lution

Luminox Watch Company has been gradually introducing new versions of all their most popular models over this past year. All the new models carry the "EVO" signature, which Luminox tells us is short for "evolved." And that indeed is what Luminox is trying to accomplish.

Virtually all the classic Luminox models have been around for the last ten years. These were groundbreaking watches when Luminox introduced them but they have now been copied by other so-called military brands. A few watch companies, most notably Smith & Wesson (also offered by Gem of the Day and Time4Tritium), have even copied the TRITIUM ILLUMINATION of the Luminox.

So Luminox decided to reinvent their best selling watches for three very important reasons:

Luminox wanted truly unique and original styling. They wanted styles that would be "exclusive" and they wanted to own the copyright on the styles. They felt that having original styles would make the brand more desirable. And, because others had copied the old Luminox styles, they felt the old look had become commonplace.

And the new Nylon Velcro strap is larger and wider. It's more comfortable and looks better. People who see it in our showroom can't understand why Luminox didn't do this sooner!

We were surprised and excited this morning when our first shipment of the all new Citizen Skyhawk AT Flight Computer Watches arrived from Citizen. We only received the signature rubber dive strap model, JY0000-02E. We assume that the steel bracelet model will follow in a few days.

Here are our first impressions. We will have new, additional photography and more information on our websites in the next few days.

First, the orange LED backlight for the digital displays is excellent! It's much brighter than we had anticipated with good coverage and no glare. This feature alone will win over virtually all older Citizen Skyhawk owners.

The normal black on gray LCD display has good contrast and is easy to read in both indoor light and bright sunlight.

We LOVE the analog battery charge display. This display is always on unless you are checking the Radio Control Atomic Clock setting. All our watches arrived fully charged and ready to operate.

Another great and unexpected feature is the home city LCD window that shows you the setting for the ANALOG display. This is a great feature when you are setting the watch to different time zones. The watch also has a permanent home city 24 hour subdial so you know the exact daypart for your analog setting.

This "home city" 24 hour subdial is completely separate from the 24 hour UTC or ZULU time subdial (below the 12'clock position on the watch face). All of this is so intuitive that this quickly becomes the perfect world time watch! The fact that Citizen also recognized the need to set up the watch for 29 time zones (instead of the original 22 time zones on older models) makes this a full fledged world time computer.

The watch will attempt to "sync" with the atomic clock three times each night (at 2 am, 3 am and 4 am). We were able to initiate the "on demand" sync at about 6 pm here in Mississippi, but only by going outdoors. We expect night reception will be vastly better, but we will keep you informed.

Since the watch is extremely accurate, there should be no problems if your watch fails to "sync" each night.

We'll file some additional reports here in the next few days, but our first impressions are extremely favorable. The only real problem we anticipate will be the previously announced lack of availability. If you are going to want one of these watches this fall or Christmas, please order very, very early. They will be sold out.

Innovative Alarms

Almost since the beginning of timepieces, people have been buying watches with an alarm. Seems like a handy feature. I mean you always have your watch with you, why not use the alarm? Maybe to remind yourself to pick up the kids. Maybe to take some medication. Frankly, we use alarms for dozens of reasons every day.

Tour de France

I simply must add a note about the extraordinary WEB SITE for the Tour de France.

The promise and the power of the Internet are close to being realized with this dazzling news, sport and analysis web site. For any fan of the Tour or of bicycle racing, this is a wondrous site full of features and information.

Hot New Color Watches

With the recent change in factory making Luminox Watches in Switzerland we have had a few comments (and a few complaints) that color dials for the Luminox Series I Watches and Series II Navy Seals Dive Watches are less intense. The blue is more of a baby blue and the yellow is more of a light yellow.

Most customers are unaware of the change and many like the new colors, but.......

We were very intrigued by the all new UZI Color Watches just introduced by the folks at Smith & Wesson-UZI. These watches are really hot! The dial colors are intense and bright and the yellow gold UZI logo looks fantastic, too.
